The Law of the Mind for Marketing Yourself as a NLP Practitioner

NLP PractitionerAl Ries and Jack Trout said something very interested in their fantastic book “The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing”

They said that; “It is better to be first in the mind than it is to be first in the marketplace.”

What they are suggesting is that it is infinitely better to be first in the prospects mind than it is to be first in the marketplace. Because in marketing terms, being first in mind is EVERYTHING. Then you want to be first in the marketplace.

What we are really talking about here of course is Perception. Marketing in essence is a battle of perception; who is perceived most favourable in your marketplace?

Lots of business owners think that the only way to influence perception is by throwing a lot of money at it. To create a vast array of products, have amazing looking stands are trade shows with experience glossy promotional giveaways. They spend large amounts of money advertising in magazines or run lots of direct mail campaigns.

This suggests then that the answer to influencing perception then is just money. By the way it’s not! As a NLP Practitioner you can easy influence the perception of your prospective clients by putting in place the points raised in our Marketing Your Coaching Business book. The key with doing this is to do each step well. One at a time because if you try and do it all at once you will quickly reach overwhelm. The danger is that then you’ll think this is all too much and not complete it. We have a saying that we use at our NLP Practitioner trainings, “Eat the elephant one spoon at a time.” An elephant is a big thing, if you focussed on eating it one spoon at a time, before you know it, you would have eaten an elephant.

You want to ensure that you create a good first impression because it’s very difficult to change people’s minds. Perceptions stick and you can’t suddenly become a different person in the prospects mind.

Rules For Achievement 2 – Understand What’s Important to You

This is a critical aspect that you need to consider and get clear on. Discover what your values are in the context you are focusing on creating the change in. You have to understand what’s important to you in this context, to figure out the factors that drive you and to write them down. Writing it down is important because it’s keeping a record of all of your developments and then that serves you by demonstrating the changes that you have made and it makes the whole process undeniable for you.

Here’s an example – Sam opened the notebook at a fresh page and at the top of it she wrote in big bold letters VALUES and alongside it she wrote the question. “What is important to me about my career?”

Sam then proceeded to write down her values. She kept asking herself the question over and over again to stimulate the flow of this important information, and this is what she got.

VALUES – “What is important to me about your career?”

After Sam had managed to get all of her values out and on paper, and rest assured there were many more than you see here we have only given you her top twelve for the sake of space. Sam then reviewed all of the values that she had written out and numbered them putting them into an order of importance, number one being her most important value, number two her second most important value and so on. She then rewrote her list only really paying attention to her top twelve values, so laid out on a clean page in her notebook was the list you see below.

    • Achievement
    • Self worth
    • Fun 
    • Contribution 
    • Exciting

By working through this process, you’ll start to get a real feeling of clarity and progress, it will also make you realise how important it is to maintain life balance too.

Maybe the area you will pick will be career, maybe relationships, health & fitness or personal development or spirituality. What we value and the beliefs we hold have a profound influence on how we think about things and how we behave. For example if you don’t believe that you are good at public speaking, then it’s highly likely that this will impact on your performance and this will be evident to others in how you act and behave. On the flip side of the coin, if you spend time developing your skills and building your confidence in this area of expertise then it’s likely that your beliefs about your capabilities in this context will change. Changing a limiting belief like that is incredibly empowering!

Generally our values and beliefs are in operation ‘behind the scenes’, that is, they are often outside of your conscious awareness. This is how people have such strongly held views that influence everything they do and say.

What you hold dear to you and what you believe to be important to you has evolved and shaped throughout your life. Every experience  that you have had and every person that you have met will have, in some way, influenced your values and beliefs. It’s not just individuals that have a set of values either. Many organisations have a core set of values or criteria that represent what’s important to them. 10 Life Lessons Everyone Forgets Too Soon

1. Life is Short
We all know on some level that human beings live a relatively short life. So it’s important to live your life to the full. Instead of being afraid of the “what if’s”, take action. Be bold, be courageous, have goals and dreams that you are willing to expend energy on achieving.




2. Create Your Future
It’s YOUR life. You may have lots of well meaning people around you who try to persuade you but ultimately they can’t decide for you. The decision is yours. Choose a path that is aligned to your goals and your intuition and be prepared to be flexible on changing paths as well. Remember to be productive, passionate and have belief in what you are doing.

3. “Busy” is Not the Same as Being Productive
Just because you are being busy does not mean you are being productive! It’s a common mistake that lots of people make in that they involve themselves with lots of activity that doesn’t generate any real results. People create an illusion of self importance with their busy-ness, rushing , here, there and everywhere like a hamster in a wheel.
The problem is that it’s not a sustainable cycle in the long term and by being productive you can actual enjoy living a purposeful life instead.

4. Fall Down 7 Times, Get Up 8
This is a great life lesson! We all make “mistakes” in life, it’s part of the journey. The secret is to learn from them and also to forgive ourselves. A mistake only becomes a problem if you don’t learn the lesson.
Successful people know this and have experienced failures in the past and used what they discovered to their advantage. That’s the difference between a Master and a beginner. The Master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried.




5. Thinking About It and Doing It are Completely Different Things
Don’t make the mistake of believing that just because you thought it, it will definitely happen. You have to be prepared to go out there and take action to achieving what you want.

You’ll know people who talk a good game but when it comes down to it, they do nothing to action their ideas.
Good things don’t come to those who wait. If you wait until you feel 100% ready to begin, you’ll likely be waiting the rest of your life.

The key is to TAKE ACTION

6. Don’t Hold Out for an Apology Before YOU Forgive
Your life will become so easier when you learn to just accept the apologies that you never got. How? By just being thankful for the lessons discovered from the experience – whether it was a good experience or not. By looking at life in this way, you’ll soon realise that holding a grudge from the past is a waste of your time and your happiness today.

Forgiveness is about freeing yourself of the burden of being an eternal victim.

7. Some People Will Cause You to Feel Less Than Amazing
Surround yourself with people who support and boost you up instead of those who bring you down.
If someone is constantly undermining you and leaves you feeling drained, for whatever reason, then they’re probably not close friend material. Listen to your intuition because there’s lots of the right people out there who will energize you and inspire you to be your best.

8. If You Want to be Loved, You Have Got to Love Yourself First.
All too often people want to be loved but they are not prepared to love themselves. If you want to be loved, you’ve got to go first. You’ve got to love you.

9. What You’ve Got is Not Who You Are
We live in a material world where we are constantly being sold to. We are convinced that we need this and we should have that. But at the end of the day it’s just stuff. In fact you could still have a marvellous, fulfilling and satisfying life without half of the possessions you own. In modern day society we are becoming disconnected from meaningful relationships, connections and experiences and more focused on electronic devices and tablets.

Create your own culture by reducing the amount of time in front of the computer or TV. Put down the newspaper or the tablet and start engaging with people and enjoy meaningful connections and conversations.
We are being tricked by the media and by marketing to believe that our concerns should be around what celebrities are doing and how they look. Are we following that trend? Are we wearing the right fashion this season? Are we driving the right car? Are we being seen in the right places? This motivation just creates a false and unhappy illusion.

It’s time to wake up and discover the real you, your friends and family. What really makes you tick? Quit being the perfect consumer, get off the tread mill and connect with what’s actually important to you.

10. Every Second, Everything Changes
I love that saying “Everything happens for a reason” – maybe it’s not always immediately obvious but over time it becomes clear. That’s why it’s important to be open to change and realise it has a purpose.
People and events come and go. Nothings lasts forever, life is fluid and doesn’t stop for anyone. What seems as an innocuous decision can create a MASSIVE change in our lives. People have had encountered significant changes, for the better or for the worse from an unpredictable event. These events are happening every moment all over the planet.
However great or bad a situation is, it will come to an end. So when things are good, REALLY enjoy it, appreciate it, get value from it.

Happiness doesn’t come to those who don’t appreciate it.

5 Statements That Are Limiting Your Life

Struggling with health problems, being concerned about relationships, wrestling with career-based issues and all the other things that life can throw at you can be challenging. It’s very easy to let things become all consuming and holding on to a number of excuses for not doing something ends up being commonplace. People find ways of justifying and validating their reasons, the problem is that is very limiting and you lose your options and your choices.

Letting go of the excuses that become entrenched in your experiences frees you up from limitations and opens you up to possibilities, options, choices and limitless potential.

If you catch yourself using the phrases that are mentioned here, or something very similar; if you choose to live your life by them, they become the influencing factor in how you continue to make decisions – which could cause you to make decisions that limit you.

It’s highly probable that you use more than one of these phrases. The first thing is become conscious of your language and become aware of the things you are saying to yourself and to others. When you catch yourself using one of these phrases (or something similar) or thinking it, pay attention: is it your voice or someone else’s? How do you feel? When are you saying it? Then contemplating the purpose for saying it will give you a clarity on what’s going on for you.

1. “I don’t have time….”
Have often do you say this? It’s a popular reason when it comes to exercise. It’s a reason that will definitely stop you from achieving your goals and dreams. The truth is we are all busy but there is no extra time. If it’s important to you, you have to make the time which means creating a schedule and then working the schedule.
A simple way to free up some more time, turn off the TV, get off Facebook and you’ll be amazed with the additional time you have for pursuing your goals.

Make the decision to keep yourself accountable for your actions.

2. “It will NEVER happen.” 
How do you know for certain? What actual evidence do you have? There’s a lot of people on the planet and I would put money on it that there is at least one person making that thing happen which you claim will never happen. Be aware that making a statement like this and allowing it to become one of the rules in your life means that you could stay stuck and cut off from your goals.
It’s a good idea to focus on how it can happen, rather than why it won’t. If you focus on the solutions you are more likely to find one.

3. “I’m not the type of person who would …”
How do you know? Have you just created boundaries and limitations for yourself rather than thinking about how you could change your perception of the situation. Or maybe you are considered about how other people will view you rather than being bold and pursuing the things you want to do in life.

4. “I could never …”
What would your life be like if you did? “Never” is a very broad-brush, sweeping statement isn’t it. In numerous ways it limits you and cuts you off from the possibilities forever! Start exploring how you could make it happen instead.

5. “Oh well, never mind …”
If you’ve explored every conceivable option, there’s strength in accepting the present moment. BUT if you’ve let your hopes and dreams slip through your fingers without trying giving it 100% of your commitment to succeeding then it’s time to have a re-think.
Don’t let your life be ruled by excuses and reasons for not achieving. From today, start to take responsibility for your results and look for the solutions which allow you to reach your desired goals and outcomes.

The Magnetic Power of Negative Emotions

When we think about what can go wrong in a relationship, there is an esoteric belief based around the universal Law of Attraction that any focused or charged habitual negative emotions can attract to you other negative emotions. When focused on relationships we must realise that all negative emotions, in-fact all emotions, obviously function on the emotional plain and the emotional plain by its very nature is magnetic.

So from a metaphysical prospective the emotional plain is water based (so the four elements are air, fire, water and earth). Now how that effects us here in the physical plain can be easiest explained by understanding that woman are water based, and men are fire based. From this we can begin to understand and make sense of archetypal male, female behaviour, women cry more than men and are stereotypically more emotionally open than men, that’s because they are predominantly water based. And water is metaphysically equivalent to magnetic.

So if you are experiencing a particularly charged emotion you are going to become highly magnetic in attracting to you people and events that are going to help you to actualise or validate that emotion. This of course works for both positive and negative emotions, so think about a time in the past when you were radiating positive emotions and remember all of the positive events and people that you attracted, you will have many experiences of this, haven’t you? And you are more than happy to take the credit for it, because of your positive attitude you made a fabulous thing happen in your life.

Now the flip side of this is where we can begin to become a bit unstuck because the same holds true for negative emotions especially if we have invested a lot of heat and energy into those negative emotions because again we have to be validated in what we believe to be true and if you are angry or sad there has to be a reason. So we unconsciously begin the search to find that reason, we run programs (ie strategies), fixations, limiting decisions, false identifications and complexes to ensure that we are indeed right.

So to put it as succinctly as I can:

Any negative emotions that you habitually have running at the unconscious level will cause you to attract more of that to you

This is because the emotional body is magnetic and this magnetic power tends to attract to you what you have most unconsciously repressed within you (uh-oh). So if there is something that you are absolutely unwilling to acknowledge, admit to or deal with, something that you are highly unconscious of, something dark, something that you can’t even contemplate? Well, the bad news is the more you repress and deny it the more you will unfortunately attract it.

Ultimately the more repressed or denied something is for you the more magnetic it becomes. NOW in a relationship that certainly sounds like it would be a PROBLEM and we continually draw it to ourselves because of its magnetic power. This is especially true when it comes to relationships because of the natural polarity of yin and yang. You just have to face the fact that whatever it is that you like in your partner, IS YOU and whatever it is that you don’t like in your partner, IS YOU and the thing that drives you absolutely nuts in your partner is ABSOLUTELY YOU.

The great news is that once you fully understand this, once you have let go of your own negative emotions and limiting decisions from your past and acknowledge what was repressed for you and in this acknowledgement allow yourself to understand it, learn from it and ultimately let it go, then and only then will you be truly free to see, experience and grow within your perfect relationship.

Competitive events can make even the most experienced athlete or sports person feel anxious. The question is how do you get control of those competition nerves and possibly cause that nervous energy to change into an advantage for you?

NLP and your ability to get in control of your mind and your thinking is the answer.

It’s not an uncommon experience for those competing in their chosen sport to become anxious around the time of or during a competition. This isn’t a problem that’s happens for professional athletes, it can happen at any level. One of our Twitter followers who competes in Dressage on her horse told us, “I feel like my mind runs away with me and I end up thinking really negatively about the dressage test. It’s almost like I’m trying to convince myself that I’m going to get a rubbish mark and that’s when I really start to feel nervous about it.”

Anxiety is linked to fear and causes the body to react in a certain way, it dumps adrenalin into your system in preparation for making an escape. Your heart and respiratory rate increases, blood is redirected to the muscles and mentally you become more alert. This of course can impact on your performance. It can be a major disadvantage if the anxiety takes over and you experience tremors and shaking. Also competition nerves and anxiety will impact on your decision making process and may stop you from making a well informed or advantageous decisions. Plus it can also effect how other people (and your horse if you are a rider) respond to you and your actions which can make the problem even worse.

From a NLP and Time Line Therapy® point of view, anxiety is one of two things. It’s either a warning from your unconscious mind that you are not focusing on what you want. You are focusing instead on what you don’t want to happen, the worst case scenario, the event going wrong. Or it’s telling you that you haven’t done enough preparation work going into the competition.

Do you sometimes feel that you’re unhappy or unfulfilled and the relationships you’ve had or the relationship you’re in, just doesn’t work for you anymore?

Maybe you seem to keep repeating the same behaviours the same mistakes, drawing the same kind of relationships to you?

So the very first thing that we have to do is change our thinking:

Consider this in terms of our relationships outside of ourselves, everything that we say about the relationship outside applies to the relationship inside. What does this mean?? Well everything you say about your significant other, the primary relationship in your life that you have or that you want to have, is directly related to the relationship that you have between your conscious mind and your unconscious mind.

Carl Jung said something that was very interesting, he said “‘that which is most repressed within us must by need be projected out of us”, essentially we are married to or will marry our unconscious minds, if you do not resolve your deepest suppressed unresolved issues then you will by need project them outside of yourself onto that which you want most, so all of your fears will be manifested in the one you love!!
