How to Use NLP to Pass Your Driving Test
We had a call at the Office last week from an NLP Practitioner who asked a great question about how to use NLP with a client to assist them with passing their driving test. So we thought we would share this valuable information with you.
Q: “I took my NLP Practitioner training with another training provider and I have a client who is taking their driving test for the third time and is convinced they are going to fail. They have practiced for hours and no matter how much encouragement their instructor gives them, the predominant feeling they have is that they are never going to pass. I don’t know what to do with this client. I’ve spoken to the people I did my NLP Practitioner training with and the only solution they had was to just tell me to look in my manual which I’ve done and I’m still at a loss as to what to do. Please can you help.” From James, London
A: There’s two issue here, firstly let’s have a look at a couple of NLP options that you can utilise at the NLP Practitioner level
Option 1 – Collapse Anchors
Discover the trigger for the feeling that he (I’m referring to the client as a “he” as I don’t know if your client is male or female) will fail and check that the feeling is not a major negative emotion (anger, sadness, fear, hurt or guilt). Stack a resource anchor of multiple highly associated positive resource states from the past on the first knuckle of his hand and then anchor the negative trigger on the second knuckle, collapse the negative anchor into the positive anchor and test that he can no longer get the old feeling back. Have the client visualise the picture that means to him that he has successful passed his third driving test, have him associate into the picture and adjust the sub modalities of the picture to ensure its most compelling for him and have him lock it in place as he does so you fire his positive resource anchor, have him step out of the picture making sure he sees himself in the picture achieving his goal. Test, how he now feels about passing his driving test.
Option 2 – NLP Belief Change
Ensure the client can visualise well, then discover and write down word for word the clients exact language for the following four things, 1. His un-resourceful belief that he wishes was not true. 2. What he would like to believe instead. 3. A universal belief that will always be true for the client. 4. A belief that used to be true for the client but no longer is. Have him bring to mind the visual representation of number 1 to mind and elicit the sub modalities and do the same for representation number 4. Using contrast of analysis, discover the drivers of representation number 1 and map them across to number 4. Now do the same process for representations 2 and 3 and map the drivers of 2 over to 3, then test, what do you now believe as you think about passing your driving test? Stack a resource anchor and fire of as the client visualises successfully passing his driving test.
Note: If there is major negative emotions involved please read Option 3 which includes a Master Practitioner Level process we would also recommend you always use Time Line Therapy® for major negative emotions.
Option 3 – Utilising Logical Levels of Therapy which is taught in detail at NLP Master Practitioner Level. Scramble the old strategy then Fast Phobia Model finishing with Chaining Anchors. If the client has strong negative emotions associated to the problem then it would be most appropriate to use the NLP fast phobia model to release the negative emotions held on the previous memories of the past two driving tests and any other relevant events. Then using Logical Levels of Therapy, make the client the expert and have them teach you how they do the problem, using humour, lateral thinking, and misunderstanding as they explain it feed it back to them scrambled and out of sequence keep repeating till the client can no longer run the strategy. Design a chain of anchors with four to five steps that will be the new successful strategy, stack anchor each step on individual knuckles and run the chain through to successful end state, then test, now when you think about passing your driving test how do you feel? Client will end up in resource state.
For our students we would recommend these techniques or use these in conjunction with Time Line Therapy® to create a complete change for the client. By utilising Time Line Therapy® techniques, the client can let go of unresourceful negative emotions thus empowering them for optimum results now. They will be able to produce empowering, resourceful emotional states within themselves when they choose, eliminate any negative emotions or limiting decisions and identify and change limiting beliefs, in this case “I will never pass my driving test” can be easily let go of. Plus you will be able to assist your clients to design and create a compelling future full of all of the things that they want.
We’ve got heaps more information on the Mind Training Systems website if you want to read more. Also if you are already an NLP Practitioner and would like to add Time Line Therapy® to your tool kits, please do get in touch as we offer “catch ups” for all NLP Practitioners and Master Practitioners.
The second issue here is support for NLP Practitioners, Master Practitioners, Coaches and Therapists. Over the last few months Colin and I have had lots of telephone conversations with people who have already taken a training and feel an element of disappointment with the on going support they have received from their training provider.
At Mind Training Systems, we are big on support, we champion you in becoming an expert in your field. That means that you are going to come across situations both personally and with clients where you’ll think, I’m not sure what to do here. Colin and I have worked with thousands of people in the one to one coaching that we do, in our seminars and in our trainings and have a vast knowledge base that we will share with you. In fact we love questions. So what we say to our students and graduates and we’re extending this to you as well, is call us. Call us because we are here to support and champion you in becoming an expert.
